Alice Guy-Blaché and Falling Leaves
Women played a significant role in early Hollywood cinema both on-screen and off-screen. Alice Guy (known as Alice Guy-Blaché after her marriage to Herbert Blaché, the manager of the Gaumont film studio) was one of the most important pioneers of cinema. She was the first woman to direct a film and from 1896 to 1906, she was probably the only female filmmaker in the world. Guy immigrated to the United States after directing over 180 short films in France. Much of Guy's cinematic output does not exist today.
