Taiwan & Edward Yang

 Taiwan & Edward Yang

Taiwan
1) After the founding of the People’s Republic of China in 1949, many filmmakers who had worked in
Shanghai traveled to Taiwan to work.
2)The Taiwan industry was largely commercial, emphasizing martial arts films and melodramas.
3) However, an art cinema (known as the Taiwanese New Wave) appeared in the 1980s,
and its three most significant directors
    a)Hou Hsiao-hsien,
    b) Tsai Ming Liang
    c)Edward Yang

Hou Hsiao-hsien
1)one of the most important directors on the world cinema scene,
2)winning numerous awards at Venice and Cannes.
3)Some of his most well known works include:
Café Lumiere, Millennium Mambo, and Three Times.

2) Some of his better known works include:
The River, Goodbye, Dragon Inn, and What Time is it There?

Edward Yang
1) Yang was born in Shanghai and grew up in Taiwan.
2) He sadly passed away in 2007.
3) He received a Master’s Degree in Electrical and Computer Engineering from the University of
     Florida in 1974.
4) He worked in the computer industry despite brief stints at USC’s film school and Harvard’s Graduate
    School of Design.
5) He began making films in the early 1980s but is perhaps best known in the U.S. for his film
     Yi Yi (2000).
6)It is about the lives of a middle-class Taiwanese family seen through three generations.

Yi-Yi (Edward Yang, 2000)

Above is a picture from the film clip - clip was boring:
In this clip, a father is reliving his first date with his first girlfriend (whom he has just met again after 20 years), while his daughter is actually on her first date. Yang uses parallel editing across space and time to suggest that history repeats itself, generation after generation.

Yi-Yi (Edward Yang, 2000):

Strange - couldn't tell if the two were re-hooking up. The daughter goes to the movies and doesn't really like it and her bf gives a great explanation of films doubling your life experiences.
