Feminist Cinema
Feminist Cinema
1) Feminism was a secondary concern (or as Mast and Kawin put it: a subtext) in mainstream cinema in
America during the period.
2) Female directors had to fight their way into a system largely dominated by men and
had to direct films that would appeal to a widespread audience.
3) In contrast, avant-garde cinema in the U.S. had been overtly feminist since the 1940s.
4) In addition to more well known female directors working in Hollywood like Mary Harron,
Sofia Coppola, and Julie Taymor, there were a number of female directors
making independent feature narrative fiction films that centered on female issues in the 1970s and
1980s.
