Russia and the Former Soviet Union

Russia and the Former Soviet Union:
1)After the death of Stalin in 1953,
2)Soviet film enjoyed a new life (or de-Stalinization)
3)under Nikita Khrushchev from 1953 to 1964.

Under Nikita Khrushchev from 1953 to 1964
1)The Soviet Union made advances in science and technology
2) and censorship was relaxed during the period under Khrushchev.

After Khrushchev
1) Following Khrushchev’s term
2) it became increasingly difficult for filmmakers to work in the Soviet Union
3) under leaders like Leonid Brezhnev (1964-1982).
4) Although the government subsidized filmmaking
5)many films were not approved for production
6)or shown widely in major cities like Moscow.

When the Soviet Union disbanded in 1991:
1) the government subsidies also ended.
2) The post-Soviet directors were forced to develop self-supported national cinemas
3)and join with other nations to produce international co-productions.

Mast and Kawin identify

 and
Andrei Tarkovsky

as the two greatest filmmakers of the post mid-1960s Soviet Union.
