The Piano (1993)
In The Piano, a pianist named Ada (Holly Hunter) is sold into marriage to a New Zealand frontiersman (Sam Neill). She travels with her young daughter (Anna Paquin) who serves as her interpreter via sign language. Ada hasn’t spoken a word since the age of 6 and expresses herself through her piano playing.
The following clip showcases Campion's impressive visual style as Flora dances while Ada looks on and plays her piano . The scene is among the most memorable from the film and highlights Campion's mastery of composition and cinematography.
